Costa Rica Draw Latest In Unpredictable Results In Nations League

We are almost at the halfway point of the group stage of the first Concacaf Nations League, and surprising results continue to be the story of the tournament. The latest result came last night, when Costa Rica played on the road against Haiti in the Bahamas and walked away with only a point in a 1-1 draw — and they only managed that thanks to Keylor Navas. It wasn't the worst result for Costa Rica, who will still fancy their chances to group Group D in League A and advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

But it just goes to show that these games are providing plenty of intrigue, and chances for countries to pull off upsets over more favored nations. Such as when Bermuda, having already lost 4-1 at home to Panama, returned the favor just days later, heading to Central America and pulling off a shocking 2-0 defeat of Los Canaleros. That result likely won't sway the outcome of the top of the group, with Mexico surely to take that top spot, but that result could have an impact on who finishes second and third.

And the surprising results are far from isolated to just League A. Head down to League B, and in Group A, Grenada is currently top of the group, with all teams having played half of their games. How big of a surprise might that be? In a group with French Guiana, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Belize, it was the Spice Boys that were the lowest-seeded team in the group.

And now, they are just a couple of results away from promotion to League A, and automatically earning a spot in the 2021 Gold Cup, a tournament they have not played in since 2011.

In Group B, El Salvador's loss to the Dominican Republic in September has set up the Los Cuscatlecos for an enticing matchup on Saturday. A trip to first place Montserrat could go a long way in determining who will earn promotion to League A for the 2021-22 version of the Nations League. El Salvador might have been the presumptive favorite, but given what has happened so far in the tournament, a win is anything but a given for the Central Americans.

There is still plenty to be decided in the first Nations League group stage, which concludes during the November international window. Though some favorites should be expected to win the respective groups, it is not out of the question that there will continue to more and more surprises, on a game-to-game basis, and where teams finish the tournament.

If you're a team favorite to win your group, don't rest on your laurels. There are other teams out there dying to make a point, and using this stage to make it so far.
